I’m a senior golfer who is struggling to get my handicap down.
Golf can be a tough sport but the handicap rating doesn’t lie and mine is embarrassing.
I got as low as 13 at a time and survived as 15-17 for a long while, but this last 6 years in particular have just seen me travel in one direction upward.
I’d now be classed as an ageing athlete as I turn 65 next month or maybe it’s just ageing and a lot less of the athlete!!
So with that in mind I have decided to do something about it in 2026.
Here is the actual current state of play regarding my numbers:
Home course County Armagh Golf Club in Ireland - Par 69
Handicap Index 26.4
White: 27
Green: 26
Red: 20
Looking at my last 100 scores the lowest Index (early) was 18.1 from then its been a steady upward graph to the current 26.4
Back in 2018 I was shooting 92 on the then Par 70 course off the whites, so I know I can play good enough golf to lower this if I apply myself, so that is what this year is going to be about and I’m going to document that journey as well as a place where I chat about all things golf.
I’m going to be realistic and this probably won’t involve any formal lessons as I’m at the stage where my swing isn’t going to change radically but I feel that I can improve by being a lot more intentional both on and off the course regarding my game and my preparation for it.
So here goes join me as I journey through the season and try to move from consistent 100 plus scores to more mid 90 to low 90’s as I attempt to shave this beast down to 22 and maybe lower!!
How good can I get at golf in one year?
What handicap do you think it’s possible for me to get down to in 1 year of playing golf, while really working on my game and the things around it?
Let me know in the comments.
I will show you my journey from my present golf hacker status right up until the end of qualifying competitions in 2026.
I show you all the sections of golf development or lack of it and how I get there, struggles, highs and lows and how I work my way through them.
That’s it from the first range session of 2026 which has taken place in pouring rain and with no golf course open it was a last resort that actually helped me with my club selections for the incoming season.
I’ll do a what’s in the bag video for everyone shortly,
If you’ve got this far thanks and hopefully this rain stops and I can get back onto the course soon.
